Business process models are widely used to describe how work is done within an organization, while various product models describe what is done. Various approaches based on model-driven engineering (MDE) concepts, such as the OMG MDA (Model Driven Architecture) and related efforts around domain-specific languages have gained much popularity. Business models are described in the computation-independent models (CIMs) while for the product models, the model-driven approach separates platform-independent models (PIMs) from the platform-specific ones (PSMs) in order to abstract the implementation technologies. The objective of SHAPE is to support the development and the realization of enterprise systems based on Semantically-enabled Heterogeneous Architectures(SHA). This will be achieved by:<ul><li>Enriching the current logic-based Semantic Web reasoning methods with methods from information retrieval, machine learning, information theory, databases, and probabilistic reasoning.</li><li>Employing cognitively inspired approaches and techniques such as spreading activation, focus of attention, reinforcement, habituation, relevance reasoning, and bounded rationality.</li><li>Building a distributed reasoning platform and realizing it both on a high-performance computing cluster and via &quot;computing at home&quot;.</li></ul>The consortium is an interdisciplinary team of engineers and researchers in Computing Science, Web Science and Cognitive Science, well qualified to realize this ambitious vision. Research in scientific workflows produced many results in this area, but still a huge manual effort is required to scientists to integrate different available data and compose different available services. Semantic Web is currently one of the most interesting research areas with focus on automation of interoperability composition, and discovery of services that can bring a huge contribute to the research in scientific workflow. The objective of the collaboration among the University of Innsbruck and the University of Malaga, is to bring together their respective expertises in Semantic Web technologies and scientific workflows to produce a prototype of a innovative Semantic based framework for scientific workflows. Incentives for Semantics http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/#78 A critical mass of semantically annotated Web pages or multimedia repositories, as well as business-relevant, widely-accepted ontologies would provide a feasible basis for the development of real-world semantic applications, for the adoption of this technology at industrial level, and, why not, for the realization of the Semantic Web vision. It is therefore understandable that the question of how to create semantic content effectively and efficiently has been investigated in several areas related to semantic technologies, ranging from ontology engineering, ontology learning and ontology population, to the semantic annotation of text, media and Web services resources. The result is a maturing inventory of techniques and tools which primarily aim at a complete (or at least partial) automation of the semantic content generation and management tasks, as a means to lower costs and improve productivity. Whilst the quality of such (fully) automated approaches has constantly improved, it is still far from outweighing the manual effort savings achieved, especially when it comes to the creation of meta-data for non-textual sources or the development of a widely accepted ontology, tasks which are human-driven through their very nature.The declared aim of this project is to bridge the gap between human and computational intelligence in current semantic content authoring R&D landscape and to produce methodologies, methods and tools optimally exploiting and combining the two to enable the massive creation and feasible management of semantic contents in an economically based manner, and consequently, to provide the missing building block towards the world wide uptake of semantic technologies. It will employ automated crawling, information retrieval methods and analysis techniques and shall be able to scale with the increasing number of services, as this approach does not rely on a central editorial team that would necessarily become a bottleneck once the number of deployed services reaches Web scale. Consequently, the approaches developed by Service-Detective can adapt quickly to changes in terms of the available services. The search engine will leverage available information exposed by current technologies and extend this information with semantic annotations to allow for more accurate retrieval. It will use the service information to enable efficient clustering and matchmaking of services, in view of the goal to provide an efficient discovery and clustered search possibility for Web Services. Service Bundler http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/#81 The mission of the Service Bundler project is to study, design, develop and prototype an open, self-adaptive and generic SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) integrated platform with its primary research focus on composition and monitoring of services. We will develop a Service Bundler business-pervasive platform that will enable to integrate, compose and expose in a secure and adaptive way innovative services. This will be done by applying business rules and self-adaptive decision-support guidelines to guarantee the best combination of the needed services by taking into account the business context. The role of the Service Bundler project would be to provide a set of core technologies for the base seekda Service Platform. We aim to allow the use of abstract process templates – enabling the composition of available Web Services – such that, with the support of a monitoring mechanism, they can be executed consecutively without any user interaction in-between. Even if some of these services would not perform as initially expected, these should remain transparent to the end user. From an external perspective, such a composition (or bundle as we call it in this proposal) of services would act like one service, offering a specific eCommerce functionality. The fact that this functionality is only reached after executing multiple services should be hidden behind seekda’s platform. EnvIronmental Services Infrastructure with Ontologies http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/#86 The ENVISION project provides an ENVIronmental Services Infrastructure with Ontologies that aims to support non ICT-skilled users in the process of semantic discovery and adaptive chaining and composition of environmental services. Innovations in ENVISION are: on-the-Web enabling and packaging of technologies for their use by non ICT-skilled users, support for migrating environmental models to be provided as models as a service (Maas), and the use of data streaming information for harvesting information for dynamic building of ontologies and adapting service execution.The ENVISION Environmental Decision Portal supports the creation of web-based applications enabled for dynamic discovery and visual service chaining. The ENVISION Ontology Infrastructure provides support for visual semantic annotation tools and multilingual ontology management. The ENVISION Execution Infrastructure comprises a semantic discovery catalogue and a semantic service mediator based on a generic semantic framework and adaptive service chaining with data-driven adaptability.Scenario requirements and pilots from the ENVISION user partners focus on landslide hazard assessment and environmental pollution (oil spills) decision support systems. It is very difficult to predict improvements for given changes of the recommendation process, however, and manual changes are usually very expensive.Therefore, SOFAR ("Semantics and Ontologies for Feedback-driven Adapting Recommender Systems") proposes automated adaptations of recommendation processes making use of semantic technology. Sound materials are often held separately from other materials and media, they cannot easily be listened to or browsed, and there is no way to search the content. Existing systems which attempt to deal with these issues are often library or content specific, of limited functionality, or difficult to use. Extending over two and a half years, the EASAIER project will enable enhanced access to sound archives by providing multiple methods of retrieval, integration with other media archives, content enrichment and enhanced access tools. More importantly, this infrastructure will exploit SemanticGov as an enabler for total reengineering of PA service provision and propose a paradigm shift of today's modus operandi. Current BPM technologies mainly focus on the level of technical details for handling and executing IT-supported business processes, neglecting the fact that BPM techniques are supposed to support handling of business processes at the business level. This results in the need for human expertise and intervention for mediating between the business and the technical level, which hampers the benefits of such technologies tremendously. Hence, in order&nbsp;to overcome these deficiencies, we aim at developing an exhaustive semantic description framework that allows managing business processes on the business level as well as support for automated execution of business processes on the technical level. Semantic Engineering Support Environment http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/archive/#31 The SENSE project deals with the development on an Engineering Support Environment which improves communication in product development processes. The scenarios targeted by the SENSE project are intelligent change management, engineering rationale detection and conflict resolution and redesign of existing products. While state-of-the-art solutions are rather static and process-oriented, SENSE is highly flexible and is oriented to support communication processes. SENSE build on top of state-of-the- art R&amp;D results in the area of multi-agent systems, semantics and tuple spaces. Within the project a set of scientific and technological innovations will be developed. Semantic facades will allow the semantic enrichment of legacy data. A minimum high level ontology will provide standardized communication means for inter-system communication. Specific dynamically adaptable reasoning mechanisms will be developed. A novel form of communication infrastructure combining message-based on triple-space based communication will be developed. The underlying motivation for BPM is that organizations need to continuously align their running business processes, as executed within multiple heterogeneous systems, with the required processes as derived from business needs. BPM has gained significant attention in both research and industry, and a range of BPM tools are available. However, the degree of mechanization in BPM is currently very limited. The major obstacle preventing a coherent view on business processes is that the business processes are not accessible to machine reasoning. Additionally, businesses cannot query their process space by logical expressions, e.g. in order to identify activities relevant to comply with regulations. Founded on ontologies Semantic Web technology provides scalable methods and tools for the machine-readable representation of knowledge. Semantic Web Services (SWS) make use of Semantic Web technology to support the automated discovery, substitution, composition, and execution of software components (Web Services). BPM is a natural application for Semantic Web and SWS technology, because the latter provide large-scale, standardized knowledge representation techniques for executable artefacts. Our proposal is to combine SWS and BPM, and develop one consolidated technology. Specifically, we will create horizontal ontologies which describe business processes; vertical telecommunications oriented ontologies to support domain-specific annotation for our chosen economic sector; and a suite of tools based on the results of the SEKT and DIP IPs. Together with the other&nbsp;ESSI projects this will further strengthen the global leadership of EU-funded technology development. SWING http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/archive/#34 SWING aims at deploying Semantic Web Service (SWS) technology in the geospatial domain. In particular, we address two major obstacles that must be overcome for SWS technology to be generally adopted, i.e. to reduce the complexity of creating semantic descriptions and to increase the number of semantically described services. Today, a comprehensive knowledge of logics, ontologies, metadata and various specification languages is required to describe a service semantically. We will develop methods and tools that can hide the complexity - and automate the creation - of the necessary semantic descriptions. The objective of SWING is to provide an open, easy-to-use SWS framework of suitable ontologies and inference tools for annotation, discovery, composition, and invocation of geospatial web services. SWING builds on the DIP and SEKT IPs, by adopting, combining and reinforcing their results. A main key to the solution is adapting the SWS technology of DIP to handle geospatial services and content. Another key is utilising and advancing the technology of SEKT to annotate geospatial services with semantic information. A targeted synergy between these two research initiatives are demanded to maintain and extend Europe's leading role in SWS. The SWING framework and pilot application will increase the use of distributed and heterogeneous services in geospatial decision making. The results can be reused in other domains and will boost the availability of semantic services and bring the vision of the SWS a great leap forward. Exploitation of SWING's results will provide Europe's decision makers and citizens with a new paradigm of information retrieval and new business opportunities. With support by the TransIT foundation, our institute is now starting to disseminiate fundamental research results into the business area. The Internet was invented in the 1960's and provides a highly decentralized and scalable architecture for enabling large networks of computers beyond the boundaries of other communication protocols. The next step for the Internet is likely to be the direct integration of applications and computers via Web service technology. This network no longer directly interlinks humans but interlinks applications and programs to provide integrated services to the human end-user. However, current Web service technology has only very little to do with the Web. It is based on the message exchange paradigm similar to email communication. Truly Web-enabled Web services will communicate via persistent publication of information. Realizing this vision and a new technology is the mission of TripCom with the result being based on the integration of Tuple Space, Semantic Web (triple), and Web service technologies. To&nbsp;this end, we on the one hand plan to improve Tuple Space technology by adding semantics and means to structure and relate tuples in a scalable and linkable Triple Space architecture. On the other hand we plan to improve Web service technologies by adopting the flexible and powerful asynchronous communication model of Tuple Spaces. Triple Space Computing http://www.sti-innsbruck.at/research/projects/archive/#38 Triple Space Computing is a very simple and powerful paradigm that inherits the communication model from Tuple Space Computing model and projects it in the context of the Semantic Web. Instead of sending messages forward and backward among participants, like most of today's web applications do, future triple-based applications will just use a simple communication based on writing and reading RDF triples in a shared space. Clever middleware is required to provide a virtual Global Semantic Space without requiring each application either to download or to search through the entire Semantic Web.
