The lecture will be organized on a biweekly basis. It will be accompanied by a biweekly seminar, held just after the lecture.

  • December, 6 2010:
    Next session: Lecture on December 13, 1.15PM - Proseminar postponed!
  • October, 30 2010:
    The lecture that was initially planned for November 29 will take place on December 6 (one week later) instead. Please update your agenda accordingly.
  • October, 4 2010:
    The next lecture of Introduction to Modeling including the proseminar will take place next week on Monday Oct 11, 2010 (13:15 - 14:45 VO, 15:00-16:30 PS) due to a swap with the course 437239 - VO/2 Computer Science Essentials for Management–Core I.
    The first slot of 437239 - VO/2 Computer Science Essentials for Management–Core I will then be on Oct 18, 2010.
    This also means the first assignment is also due next week (Oct 11, 2010). All information will be posted to the course website shortly.

 
 

Attendance policy

The lecture and the seminar are closely interrelated. Assignments for the next seminar will be made at the end of each lecture. Assignments require material presented in the lecture in addition to textbooks and extended reading. Assignments will be discussed and evaluated during the seminar. The attendance of the seminar is obligatory. Students are allowed to miss maximally 2 hours of the total number of seminar hours.
 

Exams

The lecture will be concluded with a written examination in the last lecture.
The pro-seminar requires students to complete assignments. Assignments have to be sent to the lecturer the day before the pro-seminar. Students have to present their solutions in class. The submissions and presentations as well as as participation in class will be evaluated.

Description: 

The lecture and the associated seminar introduce modeling as a discipline within Computer Science and Engineering, and some of the the most important modeling paradigms of the last decades (ER modeling, object orientation, ontologies, service-oriented modeling etc.) It presents core modeling primitives, principles, and best practices, exemplified by real-world examples and case studies.

Students will get an overview on the most important principles of (domain) modeling, learn how to model correctly and usefully, and get familiar with several established modeling paradigms, their commonalities and differences.
