Introduction
Web services is the name for an important set of technologies for developing large-scale distributed systems, under the umbrella of Service-oriented architectures (SOA). Service-orientation principles encourage decomposition of distributed IT systems into coarse-grained, business-oriented services, along with the use of XML as the basis for data interchange. These characteristics increase the manageability, reusability and evolvability of service-oriented systems.
This course starts by introducing the principles of Web and Service Sciences along with the various technologies that are used by Web services. It then proceeds to the application of semantic technologies in service-oriented systems. Semantic technologies are necessary for efficient dealing with large numbers of available services.
