Motivation The SALERO project [1] aims at making cross media-production for games, movies and broadcast faster, better and cheaper by combining computer graphics, language technology, semantic web technologies as well as content based search and retrieval. In the course of this project we are developing methods to annotate multimedia items like images, videos or complex 3d animations and also domain ontologies to explicitly declare  what the content of these items is about. One typical statement that should be expressible about an image in a formal way would be "This image shows the virtual character 'Bong' traveling on his couch to an alien planet".

Main questions:
1.  How can / do designers use the ontologies to annotate their output and
2.  How they are able to extend the vocabularies that they use to annotate at the same time

Aim of this thesis is the development of methodologies for the integrated creation and use of domain ontologies in multimedia authoring environments at the same time to semantically and structurally annotate images.
